Zelenskiy says Ukraine will try to restart diplomatic process to end war

Updated below:

KYIV – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Tuesday that Ukraine will try to “reactivate” the diplomatic process to end his country’s war with Russia.

“It’s important to have support for this,” Zelenskiy said at a press conference in Madrid alongside Spain’s Prime Minister.

Later on, he said he planned to discuss with Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday how to bring a “just peace” to Ukraine.

Turkey was the venue for talks between Ukrainian and Russian representatives in spring 2022 as well as earlier this year, but those failed to bring about an end to the fighting.

I think that (meeting with Erdogan) will be enough for a substantive discussion,” he said.

We have some positions and signals from the U.S., we’ll see tomorrow,” Zelenskiy added without giving details. REUTERS

There has been talk of prisoner exchanges being negotiated the past couple of days, but, the above report is the first talk I’ve come across about settling the conflict- I’m doubtful.

Mediation for prisoner exchange

Ukraine announced that a prisoner exchange with Russia may resume, with mediation by Türkiye and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his Security Council chief said they were hoping for the release of 1,200 Ukrainians.

Witkoff is going to meet Zelensky in Turkey

US special envoy Steve Witkoff is set to join talks with Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara on Wednesday

But, NO Russia representative will be in attendance

But no Russian representative is set to join the meeting in Ankara, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

He added that while there were “no concrete plans” for Vladimir Putin to speak to either the Turkish side or to Witkoff, the Russian president was “of course open to a conversation”.

So, perhaps a video conference of some sort?

There is speculation that the meeting is an attempt to allow for Ukrainian soldiers to leave one of the cauldrons they are caught in?

And then there’s the corruption scandal… though that’s been a fairly quiet topic?
