Not sure if it’s been quite 20 years, myself, but, it’s definitely been at least 15 years of worsening relations between the two countries. Contrary to the abundance of mis/disinformation that’s crossed my screen, while doing my own work.
“In any case, what’s the essence of the current escalation, which, unlike previous phases, has some factual basis? The matter is that, as you know, following the collapse of Assad’s regime, Iran was essentially forced out from Syria, where it significantly controlled the country through the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, whose bayonets had upheld Assad’s regime over the past 12-15 years. Another player, of course, was Hezbollah, also a pro-Iranian element. And naturally, the Russian Federation had its own expeditionary corps there, which also assisted Assad in holding power. After these three players were either weakened or entirely lost their influence in Syria, Assad’s regime collapsed and passed under the control of a very peculiar political force composed of multiple fragments. In any case, the formal leader, at least for now, is the notorious Jolani, who remains a dark horse. Analysts still puzzle over whether he’s genuinely transformed from a radical jihadist into a white, fluffy, pro-Western leader, or whether this is just a mask or tactical ploy. Either way, against the backdrop of central governmental instability, Kurdish opposition intensified. Türkiye, in an attempt to neutralize the Kurds, began actively penetrating Syrian territory. Israel strongly disliked this move. Exploiting the military-political instability on one hand and, on the other, responding to desperate pleas from the Druze community and other national minorities seeking protection against ethnic cleansing, Israel introduced troops into southern Syria, primarily into the zone demilitarized under the ceasefire agreements of 1973-1974. Subsequently, Israel expanded its presence to certain enclaves and began conducting strikes against military facilities left over from Assad’s rule, which Türkiye could potentially utilize to establish its own military infrastructure.”
“Against this backdrop of confrontation, which has indirectly transitioned into a hot phase—since there have already been incidents, at least two, where Turkish troops advancing towards certain military facilities were stopped by Israeli fire and turned back—there are still unconfirmed reports suggesting that Israeli Air Force actions resulted in the deaths of four Turkish engineers preparing one of the bases for Turkish forces. This has not yet been confirmed. Anti-Israeli rhetoric in Türkiye has skyrocketed, escalating virtually daily. It is claimed that the Israeli army will supposedly be crushed by Türkiye in a matter of days, that within 72 hours Türkiye could seize Tel Aviv—I just don’t know if they account for the traffic jams on Israeli roads or not, because even from the Israeli border, in rush hour, you can’t always reach Tel Aviv in three days. I’m joking, of course, as you understand. But that’s not the point. According to rampant anti-Israeli rhetoric, supposedly Trump told Netanyahu during their meeting that Netanyahu should bear in mind that if Türkiye fights Israel, America wouldn’t come to Israel’s aid, because Erdoğan is Trump’s friend. And supposedly, until now, Israel has only fought against weak Arab armies, while the Turkish army is powerful, massive, and would crush Israel, and so forth. But I would like to remind Erdoğan—perhaps he’s simply unaware—that Israel has fought not only Arab armies but also directly with the Soviet Union, in the literal sense, in the 1970s and then again in 1982. In every single case—and there were many dozens of these episodes—Soviet servicemen were consistently defeated by the Israelis. Just to make this clear, this is also an important point. Nevertheless, we do not disregard this threat“
