Russia launched about 200 missiles and drones at Ukraine overnight on Monday, in what appeared to be the biggest attack on the country in weeks.

Ukraine’s prime minister Denys Shmyhal added there was damage in a number of regions and that Ukraine’s state-owned power grid operator, Ukrenergo, has been forced to implement emergency power cuts to stabilise the system.

Mr Shmyhal was one of a group of top Kyiv officials who urged Western allies and arms suppliers to allow long-range strikes into Russia, while Mr Zelenskyy redoubled his call on allies such as Poland to join Ukraine in shooting down missiles and drones over Ukrainian airspace.

The Ukrainian regions that reported damage included Rivne and Volyn in the northwest, Khmelnytsk in the southwest, Zhytomyr in the north, Lviv in the west, Dnipropetrovsk, Kirovohrad and Vinnytsia in central Ukraine, Zaporizhzhia in the southeast and Odesa in the south.

The Kremlin said on Monday that it had used high precision weapons to strike energy infrastructure vital to Ukraine’s war effort.

It also said any prospect of ceasefire talks with Kyiv had “lost its relevance” and warned of further response to the incursion into Kursk.

Ukraine says it has a new homegrown long-range weapon that will allow it to strike deep into Russia without asking permission from allies

  • Ukraine says it has a new long-range weapon to strike deep into Russia without asking permission from allies — a homegrown combination of missile and drone that the defense minister vowed Monday would provide “answers” to a wave of Russian bombings.

The “Palianytsia” was created due to urgent necessity, Ukrainian officials said, as Russia has dominated the skies since the outbreak of the war in February 2022 and Ukraine’s Western allies have placed conditions on use of their long-range missiles in Russia. On Monday, a wave of Russian missiles and drones targeted Ukraine’s electrical infrastructure in the largest such attack in weeks.

“Defenders of life should have no restrictions on weapons, as long as Russia uses all kinds of its own weapons,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a Telegram message following the attacks.

Zelenskyy confirmed on Saturday the existence of the Palianytsia, named after a type of Ukrainian bread and a word so notoriously difficult to pronounce correctly that it was used to unmask suspected spies early in the war. The Ukrainian president called it “a new class” of weapon.

Ukraine pleads with west for to use long range missiles

Ukrainian officials have called on its allies to allow long-range attacks “deep inside Russia territory” with Western-supplied weapons, amid reports of an explosion at a huge Russian oil refinery in south-west Siberia.

Andriy Yermak, the Ukrainian president’s chief of staff, asked Western countries for permission to use their weapons to “speed up the end of Russian terror” following a barrage of Russian strikes across Ukraine.

The Russian military said it had used high-precision weapons to strike energy infrastructure inside Ukraine on Sunday night, with reports of at least four people killed and 37 injured in 15 regions.

Interesting how the US presents the Russian strikes on Ukraine vs the Israeli demolition of Gaza

We’ve heard a lot today about Russia’s ongoing attacks against Ukraine. They’re brutal. They’re unacceptable. We condemn them in the strongest terms.

Yet, despite Russia’s extreme effort, Ukraine remains sovereign and independent. Celebrating Ukraine’s August 24th Independence Day after 914 days of war is a testament to its independence, sovereignty, and its inherent right to choose and protect its democratic path.

I congratulate Ukraine on its independence. This date marks the day in 1991 when Ukraine officially left the Soviet Union and became a sovereign, democratic country. It’s a day of pride for Ukraine’s resilience, and a celebration of Ukrainian heritage and culture.

The US never condemns or even investigaes Israel’s brutality- Always excusing attrocities while claiming Israel will investigate itself.
