If Bakhmut hasn’t fallen as of the post. It’s got to be close. Because the White House is already downplaying it's significance.
We’ve all seen this language used before! It’s spin, of course.
Bakhmut falling to the Russians can change the course of the war.
“These heights (in Bakhmut) are more important for the Russians than Bakhmut itself,” said a Ukrainian colleague. “Ifthey can bring their artillery here, they can target bigger cities like Kramatorsk and Slovyansk. “
Being able to target the larger cities will change the course of the war.
Russia has recently made some progress in the area around Bakhmut, Donetsk Oblast, but the potential capture of the Ukrainian city won’t affect the course of the war, White House National Security spokesman John Kirby said in Feb. 14, as reported by UK newspaper The Telegraph.
“It would not have a strategic impact on the overall war,” Kirby said in response to a question about the significance of Ukrainian troops potentially withdrawing from Bakhmut.
At the same time, he noted that Russian troops have made gradual progress in the assault on Bakhmut in the last several days. Kirby added that it was still unclear if the Russians would be able to capture it
UK Defense Intelligence reported that Russian troops advanced in the area around Bakhmut. According to the assessment, Wagner PMC mercenaries advanced 2-3 kilometers to the west, controlling the area near the M-03 highway leading to the city.

The Ukrainian sacrifice in Bakhmut is needless and horrendous. Just another dark stain on the history of our species. Somehow, to me, the “high ground / artillery range ” justification does not seem sufficient explanation for the desperation of Ukrainian tactics. I wonder if something is hidden there so incriminating that it would halt NATO help and negatively impact “public opinion” in “the west”. What could be so incriminating? Nuclear waste and dirty bombs? Bio-warfare labs? Drug links to the American establishment? Massive human trafficking and organ harvesting? Something vile anyways. The Russians better be careful when they flush out those massive salt mines.

Good point Mark!

On January 10th, Russia’s Defense Minister, Nikolai Patrushev said: “The events in Ukraine are not a clash between Moscow and Kyiv – this is a military confrontation between Russia and NATO, and above all the United States and Britain.”
Earlier, on January 8th, Ukraine’s Defense Minister, Oleksii Resnikov had said:
“The main threat to the [NATO] alliance” is “the Russian Federation. Today Ukraine is eliminating this threat. We are carrying out NATO’s mission today. They aren’t shedding their blood. We’re shedding ours. That’s why they’re required to supply us with weapons.”
Absolutely!
