The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) released a statement saying:

“We launched an operation using drones and missiles in response to the Zionist entity’s crime of targeting the Iranian consulate in Syria”.

“The operation was carried out with dozens of missiles and drones to strike specific targets in the occupied territories”, the statement read. Iranian press TV also earlier reported Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards have launched extensive drone strikes against targets in Israel.

The Lebanese government announced that it had closed its airspace temporarily and that it will reopen it at 7 am local time (04:00 GMT).

The country joins Iraq, Jordan and Israel in closing its airspace.

Iraq’s Transport Ministry announced that the country’s airspace was closed.

The management of Erbil International Airport confirmed in a press statement that the decision to close Iraqi airspace also included the Kurdish region of Iraq.

U.S. forces have downed some Iran-launched attack drones flying toward Israel, according to a U.S. defense official and two U.S. officials who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the matter.

The defense official said the effort to intercept the attack was continuing.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. The previous story is below.

Booms and air raid sirens sounded in Jerusalem early Sunday after Iran launched dozens of drones and ballistic missiles toward Israel in an unprecedented revenge mission that pushed the Middle East ever closer to a regionwide war.

The attack marked the first time Iran has launched a direct military assault on Israel, despite decades of enmity dating back to the country’s 1979 Islamic Revolution. Condemnation was swift, with France saying that “Iran has crossed a new threshold with regard to its destabilizing activities and is risking a potential military escalation.” Britain called the attacks “reckless.”

There was no immediate word from authorities on whether the explosions were an incoming attack or interceptions by air defense. Air raid sirens were reported in numerous places including northern Israel, southern Israel, the northern West Bank and the Dead Sea near the Jordanian border. Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue service said there were no reports of casualties.

Israel’s military said over 100 drones had been fired. It didn’t mention ballistic missiles, which are less easily shot down, but Iran said they were part of the attack. The U.S., with its large troop presence in the region, said it would provide unspecified support to Israel.

Israel’s defence systems

Here’s a closer look at Israel’s multilayered air-defense system:

The Arrow: This system developed with the U.S. is designed to intercept long-range missiles, including the types of ballistic missiles Iran said it launched on Saturday. The Arrow, which operates outside the atmosphere, has been used in the current war to intercept long-range missiles launched by Houthi militants in Yemen.

David’s Sling: Also developed with the U.S., the David’s Sling is meant to intercept medium-range missiles, such as those possessed by Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Patriot: This American-made system is the oldest member of Israel’s missile-defense system – used during the First Gulf War in 1991 to intercept Scud missiles fired by Iraq’s leader at the time, Saddam Hussein. The Patriot is now used to shoot down aircraft, including drones.

Iron Dome: This system, developed by Israel with U.S. backing, specializes in shooting down short-range rockets. It has intercepted thousands of rockets since it was activated early last decade – including thousands of interceptions during the current war against Hamas and Hezbollah. Israel says it has a success rate of over 90%.

Egypt forms crisis group as Iran launches legitimate attack on Israel

As reported by Al Qahera News, the crisis group works around the clock, providing regular updates to the Egyptian president on the evolving situation in the region.

“A crisis group… is closely monitoring the situation and submitting reports to President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi hour by hour,” the channel said, citing a senior security official.

Additionally, Egypt’s air defenses are on maximum alert after Iran launched a drone and missile attack on Israel, Al-Qahera News, a TV channel close to the intelligence services, reported late Saturday.

Should the Israeli regime make another mistake, Irans response will be considerably more severe. It is a conflict between Iran and the rogue Israeli regime, from which the US MUST STAY AWAY!”

I’ll be following along to the best of my ability, but find this nerve wracking

Having watched the realities of modern warfare unfold in the Ukraine this looks like a probing wave of older, cheaper missiles designed to ‘unmask the batteries’ of Israeli air defense, and analyze the protection zones, and test US / UK reaction time and strength..’ The Israelis are claiming 99% shoot down rate, one military ‘base’ hit, but very few media facts are worthy of trust.
Scary times indeed, Penny
@Kaz – it would take years for the US / Canada to ramp up domestic oil production and that after much internal turmoil , while it takes minutes for the oil corporations to raise their monopoly prices.

Perhaps, but I wouldn’t put it besides them to take special measures. Either executed by Federal or Rogue States

Hi Mark
About this
“this looks like a probing wave of older, cheaper missiles designed to ‘unmask the batteries’ of Israeli air defense, and analyze the protection zones, and test US / UK reaction time and strength.”

Agreed. I saw some information regarding the age of the missiles used- some were decades old- So, yes, this seemed more like a probing of systems and analyzing the protection zones- (US and UK were busily intercepting over Iraq and Syria) If that’s the case, Iran, will be prepared to respond to Israel- should Israel decide not to take their win and just leave it alone. I do not believe the US wants to get dragged into this specific war zone anymore than it is-
I have my doubts Israel had a 99% success rate-
