There have been civilian casualties, unfortunately. I see numbers varying from 3 or 5 or 6. Nothing like Israel’s targeting of civilians in Gaza, thankfully but sad nonetheless.
Russia launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure overnight, killing at least ten people and leaving widespread blackouts across several regions, Ukrainian officials said on Saturday.
Emergency power outages were introduced across much of the country after hundreds of missiles and drones struck power and gas facilities. Ukraine’s air force said it intercepted 406 out of 458 drones and nine of 45 missiles launched in the overnight assault.
The strikes hit Kyiv, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Odesa, Chernihiv, Poltava, Sumy and Zaporizhzhia.
Kyiv officials reported explosions across the city before dawn, with falling debris setting off fires in residential areas. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a blaze broke out in the Pechersky district before being contained. No casualties were reported in the capital.
Governor Oleg Kiper confirmed that drones damaged an energy facility in the Odesa region. He reported no deaths but said repairs would take days. Ukraine’s Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk said emergency power cuts would end once the system stabilised.
“The enemy is massively attacking Ukraine’s energy infrastructure again,” she said. “Emergency outages will be cancelled when the situation is under control. Despite the enemy’s plans, Ukraine will have light and heat this winter.”
Ukraine’s grid operator Ukrenergo said rolling blackouts would remain in place through the weekend, with Kyiv and surrounding areas facing up to eight hours without power.
The attack was one of the heaviest on the energy grid since October, when Russia’s strikes destroyed around 60% of Ukraine’s gas production capacity. Officials warned that similar large-scale attacks are expected to continue as temperatures fall.
Russia’s Ministry of Defence confirmed it had carried out a “massive strike” using long-range precision missiles launched from land, air and sea. The statement said the targets were “energy and defence industry sites” across Ukraine.
