Mr. Trump has plunged the United States into a global trade war that’s set to expand further next week when he imposes what he calls “reciprocal tariffs” on trading partners.
Mr. Carney has vowed to retaliate against the new tariffs on foreign-made autos. “It is clear that the United States is no longer a reliable partner. It is possible that, with comprehensive negotiations, we will be able to restore some trust, but there will be no turning back,” Mr. Carney told reporters in Ottawa on Thursday evening.
After their conversation
Trump described the conversation as “extremely productive”
We agree on many things and will be meeting immediately after Canada’s upcoming election to work on elements of politics, business and all other factors that will end up being great for both the United States of America and Canada,” Trump added.
On Thursday evening, Mr. Carney told reporters the conversation will be “only the beginning of a negotiation, not the end.”
Mr. Trump did not refer to Mr. Carney as “Governor,” as he did for former prime minister Justin Trudeau.
Trump, by all accounts, called him Prime Minister Carney
The Prime Minister’s Office, for its part, said the two men agreed Canada and the United States would commence negotiations on a new economic and security relationship after this country’s April 28 election.
“The Prime Minister and the President had a very constructive conversation about the relationship between our two countries,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.
“The Prime Minister told the President that he would be working hard for the next month to earn the right to represent Canada in those discussions,” the statement said.Earlier this week, Mr. Trump signed an executive order that imposes 25 per cent tariffs on foreign-made autos and some auto parts, a move that threatens to damage Canada’s auto sector that’s deeply entwined with the United States.
The new security relationship- is unlikely to be entirely new- But will have a whole lot more to do with the Arctic and continuing to target Russia
The tariff war initiated by the Trump administration has been and is continuing to sink the stock markets globally- and the word stagflation is being used.
Goldman’s stagflationary vibe sees it cut S&P 500 target again and hike recession risk
The reason for the dwindling optimism appears to be a burgeoning fear of stagflation at the bank, as tariffs build price pressures while also damaging economic activity.
