More than 600 Ukrainian troops killed in ‘retaliation operation’ – Moscow

More than 600 of Kiev’s troops have been eliminated in a Russian missile strike in the Ukrainian-held city of Kramatorsk in the Donbass, Russia’s Defense Ministry has said.

The bombardment on Sunday was a “retaliation operation” carried out in response to “a criminal attack” by Ukraine on a temporary housing area accommodating Russian servicemen in the city of Makeyevka in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) on New Year’s night, the ministry said in a statement.

Over the past 24 hours, the Russian military has managed to uncover and confirm the location of Ukrainian troops in Kramatorsk in the DPR, the statement read. This data revealed that dormitory No.28 in the city was hosting more than 700 Kiev soldiers, with 600 more staying in dormitory No.47.

“As a result of a massive missile attack on these temporary housing areas of the Ukrainian military’s units, more than 600 Ukrainian servicemen were killed,” the ministry said.

So Ukraine Pravda is reporting zero civilian casualties but not mentioning military casualties. RT is reporting more than 600 military casualties.

If the report from RT is accurate it seems doubtful to me that Ukraine is going to acknowledge this massive loss.

Thoughts?

I am taking the actions on the field with a grain of salt. We are not there, we can’t verify and both sides will publish report to manipulate their readers.

This is war(or a special police action) after all and first causality of war is the truth.

For me it feels like even if its acknowledged at one point that people fight this war because of lie, they will keep fighting for this lie.

We can’t verify because we are not on the ground- true
and both sides will publish the version favourable to them- true
and truth is always the first casualty of war! definitely true!
That said, and I’m willing to be wrong, judging by the reports particularly the Ukrainian ones I’m leaning towards this strike occurring and many Ukrainian soldiers killed

Hi Penny:
As I see it, Ukraine feels that they can only publish positive war information that will help keep the donations from the west coming. When the Russian forces withdrew from Kherson, for instance, Ukraine said it had recaptured Kherson. In fact, when the Russian forces left and told the civilians to also leave, it was because the Ukrainians might blow up the dam upstream leaving the Russian forces vulnerable to an attack by Ukraine. Who holds the territory of Kherson will have no bearing on the outcome of the war. In the meantime, the Russian military is free to bomb Kherson as much as they want from the other side of the river. Russia tries to avoid civilian casualties so when there are few or no civilians left in Kherson, it’s bombs away and the Ukrainian military that came into Kherson is sustaining massive casualties. If Ukraine calls that a victory, I am sure Russia does not mind as one of their goals is to eliminate the Ukrainian military.

Hi Gary; if I did not include that reason in my follow up- I should have because it’s absolutely correct IMO. If they published the news that a loss of this size occurred western money would dry up.
And your right about Kherson. Russia withdrew and Ukraine spun it as a win- which is what you’d expect them to do-

We often hear and I’ve written myself that the first casualty of war is truth- That’s for sure!

That said I like this quote from Winston Churchill as well

“In wartime, truth is so precious that she should always be attended by a bodyguard of lies.”

And so it is!

Gary and anyone else interested I was able to get a pdf copy of the book

Many years ago we had made a donation to this site and I’d all but forgotten about it- but it came up in a search-
