Russia vetoed a UN Security Council resolution demanding that Moscow stop its attack on Ukraine and withdraw all troops.
That was a given
China, India and the United Arab Emirates all abstained on the vote which took place on Friday. The motion was co-written by the United States and Albania, and lost 11-1.
India and UAE abstaining is interesting. Anyone have any thoughts on that?
Turkey ‘cannot stop’ Russian ships from using Dardanelles Strait
After Kiev asked Ankara to close Black Sea to Moscow
ISTANBUL – Turkish foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Friday that Turkey could close off access to the Black Sea for Russian warships but that even in this case Moscow would have the right of passage to bring ships back to their bases.
In an interview with the daily Hurriyet, Cavusoglu confirmed that Ukraine had asked Turkey to close the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus to Russian warships, citing the Montreux Convention, which since 1936 has given Turkey control over these straits.
“Turkey can limit the passage to the straits of warships, however, the Montreux Convention also states that the ships of countries involved in conflict have the right to return to their bases and must be allowed to do so,” the Turkish minister said, confirming that Ankara is abiding by the treaty.
So can the US bring ships through the straits at this time? Anyone know?
