Here’s a good one for you.

From Haaretz, headlined: “These Unvaccinated 10% Fuel Israel’s COVID Crisis”

and with the subheading: “In Israel, COVID is fast becoming a pandemic of the unvaccinated: Of the 644 patients in serious condition on Tuesday, 73 percent were from the small population of eligible Israelis who had not received any shots”

here’s the gist of it:
10% of Israelis are unvaccinated
but 11% of the Israelis in serious condition with COVID are unvaccinated
and therefore the unvaccinated Israelis are fueling the crisis!!

It makes perfect sense as long as you don’t think about it too much.

From the mathematical point of view, the difference between 10% and 11% in a case such as this is called “statistically insignificant”. In other words, it is highly probable that a different sample (for instance statistics from a different day) would show the reverse (i. e. only 9% of the people in serious condition might be unvaccinated). But of course that sample wouldn’t merit any news whatsoever, let alone a headline.

If the PERCENTAGE of Israelis with serious COVID conditions who are unvaccinated were the same as the PERCENTAGE of Israelis who are unvaccinated (i.e. proportional representation), the NUMBER of Israelis with serious COVID conditions who are unvaccinated would be 64 or 65, not 73!

We’re not supposed to be able to do the math, and we’re not supposed to remember that 73 is not very much more than 65, and even if we can do all this, we’re not supposed to think about any of it, and that’s why I’m not bringing it to your attention.

I figure, why would I do that to you? You’re my friend!!

I wouldn’t do something like that to ANY of my friends, let alone you, Pen!
