Recent developments in the BRICS grouping, however, have the potential to undermine this relatively broad consensus in Brazil vis-à-vis the benefits of membership.
So we’ll all be ostensibly protected from ‘disinformation’ Canada and the US as well as the UK are well on their tyrannical way.

Politicians, NGOs, and their enablers in the news media claim that their goal is merely to protect the public from “disinformation.” But vague definitions and loopholes in new laws will create avenues for broad application, overreach, and abuse.

In Ireland, for example, the government may soon be able to imprison citizens simply for possessing material that officials decide is “hateful.” Under the RESTRICT Act in the US, the government may soon have the authority to monitor the Internet activity of any American deemed a security risk.

Governments aim for total control. In Canada, a state agency can filter and manipulate what Canadians see online. In Australia, a single government official can compel social media companies to remove posts.

Governments and allied NGOs intend to force tech companies to comply with their rules. UK lawmakers have threatened to imprison social media managers who don’t censor enough content.
And Brazil has introduced severe penalties for platforms that fail to remove “fake news.

NGO’s = NO GOOD ORGANIZATIONS

The key area of action is the European Union. It is seeking sweeping new powers to regulate social media companies. And if it acts, it may change how social media companies operate worldwide, given the EU’s economic power and influence globally.

Under the EU’s Digital Services Act, large tech companies must share their data with “vetted researchers” from non-profits and academia, which would cede content moderation to NGOs and their state sponsors.

The US’s RESTRICT Act, sponsored by Senator Mark Warner (D-VA), threatens 20 years in prison or a $250,000 fine for accessing blacklisted websites through “virtual private networks,” or VPNs, which are ways to create a private connection between a computer or phone and the Internet.

There has been no moment similar to this one in the roughly 30 years of widespread public Internet usage in Western societies.

Officials have introduced these policies mostly in the dead of night with little publicity or outcry. There has been a virtual blackout of what’s happening by mainstream news media corporations, with many appearing to support the new laws.

As shown with the Twitter Files, the Censorship Industrial Complex is as much about discrediting accurate facts, true narratives, and content creators who threaten its power while boosting the ones that do.

We are thus witnessing the emergence of a governmental apparatus with the power to control the information environment in ways that determine what people believe to be true and what is false.

As such, it is no exaggeration to say that the West is on the cusp of a new and much more powerful form of totalitarianism than either Communism or Fascism, which were limited in their reach by geography.

The timing of the global crackdown on free speech does not appear to be coincidental.

That global crackdown included Brazil- that’s plainly clear

Last year, the Biden administration tried to create a department of censorship (“Disinformation Governance Board”) at the Department of Homeland Security that triggered a strong enough backlash to shut it down.

The censorship board was the brainchild of “former” CIA Fellow Renee DiResta of the Stanford Internet Observatory and her allies, including Senator Warner, The Atlantic Council, the University of Washington, and Graphika.

What’s happening now appears to represent the re-grouping of censorship advocacy that occurred after that defeat. With some notable exceptions, the demand for censorship is being driven by center-Left parties, with NGOs playing a subservient role.

Politicians are invoking a woke defense of “preventing harm” that is very different from the older pretext for censorship, national security. The push is race-based, immigration-based (e.g., Ireland), trans-based (e.g., Ireland and Australia), and safety- or health-based (e.g., the EU).

None of the politicians advocating censorship appear to be intellectual heavyweights, much less leaders. (that’s plainly obvious) Rather, they all appear to be tools for powerful government and financial interests, including military and intelligence leaders, hiding in the shadows.

The Brazil law proposes censorship to protect institutions from violence and institutional delegitimation following last year’s attack on Congress, which was eerily similar to the January 6 security failure in Washington, D.C.

In Canada, politicians are advocating censorship in the name of promoting Canadian culture and content, but some critics of the bill speculate that it was crafted in response to the trucker “Freedom Convoy” in 2021. The convoy was celebrated on YouTube and social media and inaccurately maligned as “racist” in the mainstream Canadian press.

The Ottawhiners and the state financed media were the most disgraceful and malignant abusers and disinformation spreaders in Canada

The article is lengthy and indepth. My suggestion is that everyone reads it in full- Or one day, places like mine, will simply be disappeared down the state sponsored censorship hole. It’s already happened to me once.

Brazil—Latin America’s largest country and diplomatic heavyweight—has come under particular scrutiny for its position on Ukraine.
The Foreign Policy piece presents Lula as an individual pressing for a truce and peaceful resolution- He has, sort of. But he’s not been entirely unbiased

Lula got to work on his peace proposal quickly after his inauguration in January. During a February visit to Washington, Lula suggested to U.S. President Joe Biden that Brazil create a so-called “peace club”—a group of countries that would facilitate peace talks

In March, a 30-minute video call between Lula and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky showed that Brazil means business.

Brazil means business?

Lula used the opportunity to convey to Zelensky the urgency of a negotiated solution to the war. Then, in April, Lula’s chief advisor Celso Amorim traveled to Moscow, where—breaking all protocol—he was received by Russian President Vladimir Putin himself. On the same trip, Amorim met with a top foreign affairs advisor to French President Emmanuel Macron. Macron has also appeared interested in negotiating an end to the conflict.

The result of Amorim’s Putin meeting was uncertain at best, with Amorim acknowledging that neither side is ready to sit down for talks

So I guess him telling Zelensky that Brazil “means business” was a non starter?

Until now, Ukraine’s preference has been to not give up any territory. Yet that could prove a costly wager for the country’s people—and its economy

A stalemated war—which is where Ukraine may be headed—is ultimately about economic resilience. There, Russia has the upper hand.

The Brazilian mediation initiative to bring the conflict to an end soon may be an opportunity to save Ukraine—rather than the naive, misguided undertaking many in the West describe it to be.

Save Ukraine?
Lula has attempted to stop the privatization of public assets. He’s been around the block quite a few times. Did he claim this asset will not be sold as a PR move only to claim afterwards his hands were tied? Which maybe they are. But if they are he would have known when he made his declaration. He has adviser and lawyers to inform him every step of the way.

So, that’s an interesting statement from Lula. I went to the original source

At my big tech censored blog, long time readers might recall my reporting on the fact that Venezuela and Turkey had very good relations. Turkey had helped Venezuela when they were being heavily, heavily abused/oppressed by the Americans..
U.S. military officials overseeing operations and defense relations in Central America, South America and the Caribbean see an opportunity to persuade some of those countries to give up their Russian-made weapons and systems and send them to Kyiv.

“We are working with the countries that have the Russian equipment to either donate it or switch it out for United States equipment,” General Laura Richardson, the commander of U.S. Southern Command, told a virtual audience Thursday during an appearance at the Atlantic Council in Washington.

Richardson said discussions with six countries, in particular, “are in the works,” but did not elaborate.

“As a matter of protocol, we are not going to discuss details about the defense resources of sovereign nations or speculate about any support to Ukraine they have not already announced,” SOUTHCOM spokesperson Jose Ruiz told VOA by email Friday.

“Insofar as offering our defense partners opportunities to purchase or receive U.S. defense equipment, we offer what we consider to be a better alternative,” he added. “U.S. defense equipment is superior in both its proven reliability and the level of sustainment support it receives during its operational life.”

“That’ll be a very, very heavy lift,” General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Friday after a meeting of the Ukraine Contact Group at Ramstein Air Base in Germany.

“The Ukrainians have the personnel, but they have to be trained,” he said. “And if you look at the weather and terrain, et cetera, you can see that you have a relatively short window of time to accomplish both those key tasks.

“I think it can be done, but I think that it will be a challenge. There’s no question about it,” Milley added.

“The best examples of that are Peru, Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia and Argentina,” said Ryan Brobst, a research analyst at the Center on Military and Political Power at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies (FDD).

“Specifically, they have a lot of Russian- or Soviet-made helicopters,” he told VOA.

According to data collected by the Swedish-based Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, at least seven Central and South American countries have bought weapons from Russia since 2000, with Brazil and Peru taking delivery of Russian military equipment as recently as 2016.
