> **Iran won’t allow military vessels to transit through the Strait of Hormuz under an agreement that the Islamic Republic is negotiating with Oman, Iran’s deputy foreign minister said.**

> The top diplomats of the two countries met to discuss managing commercial shipping traffic in the vital waterway, which remains largely shut down nearly six months after the Iran war began.

**No military vessels in the strait, Iran says**

> **Iran and Oman have reached a potential agreement for managing ship traffic in the Strait of Hormuz that would exclude military vessels from traversing the vital waterway.**

> Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi told state television late Tuesday that commercial shipping traffic into the Persian Gulf would pass through Iranian waters, while the outbound route would pass partly through Iranian waters and partly through Oman’s waters.

> He said the routes would be temporary, and that Iran and Oman must discuss a permanent maritime traffic plan within 30 to 60 days. U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to bomb Oman if it “gets in the way,” as his administration opposes parts of the evolving deal.

**No military vessels in the straits is reminiscent of the [Montreaux Convention and Turkey’s governance of the Dardanelles and the Bosphorous.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreux_Convention_Regarding_the_Regime_of_the_Straits)**

> The **Montreux Convention** regulates maritime traffic through the Bosporus and Dardanelles straits in Turkey. **It guarantees “complete freedom” of passage for all civilian vessels in times of peace. In peacetime, military vessels are limited in number, tonnage and weaponry, with specific provisions governing their mode of entry and duration of stay.** If they want to pass through the Strait, warships must provide advance notification to the Turkish authorities, which, in turn, must inform the parties to the convention.\[6\]\[7\]\[note 1\] **In wartime, if Turkey is not involved in the conflict, warships of the nations at war may not pass through the Straits, except when returning to their base.\[8\] When Turkey is at war, or feels threatened by a war, it may take any decision about the passage of warships as it sees fit.**

**Not sure how this will work in partnership with Oman, but, it’s certainly an interesting proposition**
