**Donald Trump’s ambassador to Nato has demanded that the UK and other allies increase their spending on defence to 5 per cent of GDP in order to deter the threat of a Russian attack.**

**Current UK and European targets are “not good enough” and the White House expects Nato countries to dramatically increase spending, US ambassador Matthew Whitaker said.**

The senior official said that [the current threat](https://inews.co.uk/news/world/britain-buying-arctic-territory-250m-russian-threat-3719719?ico=in-line_link) “demands nothing less” than 5 per cent and it “demands it equally from all allies”.

“This is not going to be just a pledge. This is going to be a commitment.
