If Russia takes Odesa, Ukraine will be left as a rump state. I think Poland and Hungary will take back swathes of territory, should this happen. Perhaps Romania?

Good. That will give Russia time to take Odesa. I am sure Putin has not forgotten what the Nazis did in Odesa to the protesters after the coup. No access to the sea in Ukraine. They might loose more land to Hungary and Poland.
