Israelis have decided to retaliate against Iran, says UK’s Cameron

On twitter their was an inundation of posts promoting the return of the Shah to Iran, yesterday. Many of the accounts were connected to Israel- This isn’t a shock. Israel would love nothing more than the reappearance of a despotic but western leaning ally leading Iran. Example below

The G-7 is attempting to launch a new tranche of sanctions against Iran

I am leaning towards Israel striking Iran at this time.

Israel has clearly decided to retaliate against Iran for missile and drone attacks, Britain’s foreign minister David Cameron said during a visit to Israel on Wednesday, the starkest warning yet of another volley coming in regional escalation.

World powers are striving to prevent a wider outbreak of conflict in the Middle East after Iran’s attacks on Saturday night, which involved hundreds of missiles and drones, the first time Iran has directly attacked Israel after decades of confrontation by proxies.

Iran launched the attacks in response to an ( took out the presumed wording) Israeli airstrike on its embassy compound in Damascus on April 1, which killed two generals and several other Iranian officers.

More than six months into a war between Israel and the Iran-backed Palestinian militant group Hamas that has seen flare-ups in violence across the Middle East, diplomats are searching for a way to avert direct battle between Israel and Iran.

The Iranian missiles and drones launched on Saturday were mostly shot down by Israel and its allies, and caused no deaths and only minor damage. But Israel says it must retaliate to preserve the credibility of its deterrents. Iran says it considers the matter closed for now but will retaliate again if Israel does.

It’s clear the Israelis are making a decision to act,” Cameron told reporters early in his visit to Jerusalem. “We hope they do so in a way that does as little to escalate this as possible.”

Washington and other Western governments hope new economic sanctions against Iran will help persuade Israel to limit the scope of its retaliation. Cameron said Britain wanted to see coordinated sanctions against Iran by the G7 democracies, which are meeting this week in Italy.

“They need to be given a clear unequivocal message by the G7,” he said.

Israel is expected to discuss its response to Iran at a meeting of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s war cabinet, which also includes centrist rivals brought into the government as a unity gesture after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7.

Penny,
Israel would have a hard time striking Iran. Obviously no ground troops could make the trek to Iran and if they could they would have a bitter reception. Planes taking off from Israel would have to be re-fueled on the way there and on the way back. That would entail direct US involvement. They could strike with missiles but Iranian strategic military assets are well protected under ground and the Iranians have the most modern air defenses. The vulnerabilities of US bases in the Emirates and the risk to the Straight of Hormuz would seem to preclude any overt American attack.
So the most likely Israeli retaliation would come in the form of proxy, covert terror attacks on Iranian civilians.

Here is a new low in Gaza : “the sound of women screaming and babies crying was heard late at night on both Sunday and Monday. When some of the residents went out to investigate and tried to help, they were shot at by Israeli quadcopter drones. The sounds they had heard were in fact recordings played by the Israeli drones, with the intent of forcing the camp’s residents out into the streets, where they could be easily targeted by snipers and other weaponry.”

I recall doing some posts on that very subject back at my former site!!- Thanks for the reminder

As long as the US stays out of this then retaliation shouldn’t be possible- however, the US and UK intercepted missiles on Israel’s behalf over Syria and Iraq- which means they may be willing to refuel Israeli planes while claiming they didn’t directly participate- Same as arming Ukraine but not participating- It’s all in the messaging.

“The barrage of more than 300 missiles and drones fired at Israel prompted a highly successful, hand-in-glove military action by the US and Israel to defend the country.”

Hand in glove is what bothers me.

regarding new low in Gaza- Just when you think Israel couldn’t go any lower? They do!
