In general, children are taught to respect “authority”; not to trust their own judgement. So they grow up thinking they have to obey self-styled experts and “authority” figures.

In my age group, I blame our childhood indoctrination in schools and Sunday schools. “Obey your elders; No talking in the recess lineup.” At recess: boys played on one side of the school; girls played on the other side. Every teacher possessed a “strap” and brandished it when things threatened to get out of hand. And we were made to say the Lord’s prayer — forgive us our trespasses (what trespasses could a mere child make against God?) — and pray on our knees before getting into bed at night: “Fi-sh-die-before I wake …”

Singing God Save the Queen every morning in school, and saluting the flag, and seeing films of the Queen mother still able to crochet though old and near-sighted (ooh, ahh – she’s AMAZING).

Then we (they) grow up and see it all contradicted by facts, yet we (they) struggle to hang onto the notion that those in charge still know more than we do — we just desperately want to get along in this confusing world.

So we (they) pass on the “obey authority” theme to our own offspring, lest we risk losing parental control. I could go on, as I’m sure you know. LOL

Being right is a burden; no doubt about it.
